Belong: Find Your People, Create Community & Live a More Connected Life Is the best book for anyone trying to become part of a community or who wants to start their own community.
In these times of activism, it is especially good to find a book that is a guide to getting involved and living according to your values. Radha Agrawal’s book is a well-designed and very appealing guide and the author’s enthusiasm shines through on every page. I loved working through the exercises in this book and so did many of my patients, who are all under 18.
The model Agrawal describes can be used to set up almost any kind of community. Belong also has ideas about sustaining a community. This is even more important since some of our most challenging problems – like climate change, gun control and poverty – are going to take a long time to achieve and so we’d better be able to sustain the communities working for change.
As I’ve written previously, activism promotes youth mental health and mental health in general. Helping others – and especially youth – to create a community is also helping them to stay healthy mentally. Why not give the activists you know a beautiful, inspiring book to help them get started?
You could be helping to change the world!
(Note: I read the 2018 Workman Publishing Company edition of this book.)
