I was on holiday last week. In a bookstore in Ithaca, New York, I found the Anywhere Travel Guide: 75 Cards for Discovering the Unexpected, Wherever Your Journey Leads by Magda Lipka Falck. This is a deck of 75 cards, each containing a suggestion to follow to help you get to know or understand the place you’re visiting. You can also use it to discover your own hometown. Let’s look at a few of the cards from the deck.
Here’s one example of a suggestion: “Go to a café or restaurant. Order the third and twelfth things on the menu. Enjoy.” This could be exciting and interesting anywhere – even in the same restaurant if the menu changes each season.
Another recommendation is: “Walk into a shop that makes you curious. Find something interesting inside. Buy it if you can afford it.” In fact, I do exactly this whenever I go into a bookshop, don’t you?
This deck of cards intrigues me as it is a wonderful guide for whenever you have free time, and it would certainly allow you to have many lovely vacation days anywhere. It’s small enough to take everywhere, but you could just remember two or three of your favourite instructions and follow them in every city you visit. Imagine what a great travel diary you could build from these adventures!
